January Full Body Detox to Start 2020 Happy and Healthy Whether you are someone who uses the mantra “New Year, New Me,” or someone who does not commit to resolutions or goals, it is safe to say most people are committed to being healthy. A healthy life starts with a healthy lifestyle and there is no time like the present, the turn of a new year, to set healthy lifestyle goals (especially after the much enjoyed holiday indulgences!). Each person has different goals for how to walk the path to a more healthy and wholesome path, but the main focuses are typically the same: diet, exercise and ridding your home and body of toxins. One important reset button that should be pushed is a cleanse or detox of our body.

A cleanse or detox does not mean you deprive your body of food; after all the nutrients provided by food are necessary for improved overall health. Instead, a cleanse is aimed to rid your body of toxins stemming from both food and drink intake, as well as the environment. A cleanse is a way to retrain your brain to take in wholesome, nutrient-dense foods. Obviously, no drastic change in diet or exercise should be started without consulting a doctor, as each person’s health and body require different treatments; many cleanses suggest elimination of things such as dairy, caffeine or salt. It is important to listen to your body when making dietary changes for signs of concern.

However, if you are looking to cleanse your body for the new year, essential oils can help get you on the path towards a detoxed and healthier body.

CITRUS OILS:
Lemon Essential Oil is probably the most common essential oil associated with a cleanse or detox. Lemon stimulates white blood cells to protect against infection, benefits liver health and function, and provides clarity to the body and mind. Each day, add two drops of lemon essential oil to warm water or tea.

Grapefruit Essential Oil is another citric oil that promotes a detox. It is an antiviral, antiseptic and aids in digestion. It also promotes skin health, an added benefit of a new year cleanse. Grapefruit supports the decrease of mucus in the body during detoxification. Add Grapefruit to your aromatherapy routine, in a body wash or a massage oil.

Orange Essential Oil is perfect for energizing and revitalizing the body and mind; it’s uplifting aroma will allow you to feel satisfied and happy with your life, supporting a full cleanse. It can be ingested, diffused or applied topically. Add it to household cleaner for a nontoxic all-purpose natural cleaner or place in hot water for a steam inhalation.

SPICE OILS:
Ginger Essential Oil has a multitude of known health benefits, one of the most common of which is its ability to aid in digestion and soothing an upset stomach. Ginger will allow you to properly digest your food and eliminate unhealthy cravings to assist in a productive cleanse. To use, mix with grapefruit, lemon, peppermint and 16 ounces of water and drink daily.

Fennel Essential Oil is another oil that helps with stomach concerns, including nausea, indigestion, diarrhea and constipation. Consuming fennel prior to a meal with ensure that your stomach has the proper acid levels for digestion. Fennel can be consumed orally or applied topically to the stomach.

Oregano Essential Oil is a powerful anti-bacterial agent that can fight off pathogens, bacteria and parasites. To use daily, mix with honey and hot tea or apply topically (but only with a carrier oil such as coconut oil as oregano can burn!)

Lemongrass Essential Oil has countless therapeutic uses including as an antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-parasitic, antiseptic and astringent. Lemongrass can be applied directly to the skin daily, or diluted with a carrier oil and then applied topically.

AND A BONUS CLEANSING OIL:
Peppermint Essential Oil is extremely beneficial in cleansing the lymphatic system, promoting weight loss and preventing sluggish digestion. Peppermint also promotes a healthy liver and colon. Add peppermint to tea, toothpaste or water for daily use.

Whether cleanses are a normal part of your life or you are trying to detox your body for the first time, the use of aromatherapy can significantly increase not only the ease of the cleanse, but the effectiveness of the cleanse as well. These helpful essential oil tips for cleansing your body and mind can help you approach 2020 in a healthier and more positive manner.
