Spring Cleaning: Use Natural Essential Oils It is that time of year many people initially dread but it always pays off in the long run. No, not pollen season or spring break crowds, although those could potentially be equally as dreadful. Spring cleaning time! Moving all of your heavy furniture to discover food and old socks is never fun. But the cleanliness and fresh smell you achieve afterwards is well worth the hours spent scrubbing and lifting and dusting. After all, it is important to maintain a healthy home for your family. And the great news is, there is a way to make your home smell fresher, appear cleaner and sustain a healthier environment for your family: essential oils.

Common household cleaners contain chemicals and toxins that can be harmful to your health. Ingredients in those cleaners can vary and the health risks they pose range from immediate, short-term hazards (such as, skin or respiratory irritation, headaches, watery eyes or burns) to chronic, long term illness. Not to mention these products, many of which we put down a drain after cleaning, are hazardous to the environment as they are flushed into local waterways, affecting nature, wildlife and our own drinking supply.

Essential oil based cleaners, that you can easily make on your own at home, are a much better solution. Not only do they smell fantastic, but they also create a clean and sterile environment for your family. Essential oils have vast antimicrobial, antiseptic and antibiotic properties that can rid both dirt and germs from your home. The number of essential oils is vast, each with their own benefits and purpose. Of course, some are more beneficial for cleaning purposes than others.

Lemon essential oil provides a clean, uplifting scent that will leave your home feeling, looking and smelling great. However, the smell is not just a cover for dirt underneath. The acidic properties of lemon provide antiseptic and antibacterial benefits to your cleaning routine. Lemon is great for cleaning floors, which tend to accumulate dirt and grim. Simply drop a few drops to a gallon of water to mop your floors. As an added bonus, it will help remove stains! Other citrus oils, such as orange essential oil and grapefruit essential oil, also provide these benefits.

Peppermint essential oil is often cited as a fan favorite essential oil. It’s vibrant, invigorating smell, along with its antibacterial properties, makes it a great choice for spray cleaners and air spray. For an air freshener, mix peppermint essential oil with lemon essential oil and witch hazel (or vodka!) in a glass spray bottle. For a spray cleaner, mix peppermint essential oil with diluted water in a glass bottle. Your bathroom will smell and look beautiful afterwards!

Tea tree oil is another popular essential oil with multiple purposes. It is a popular oil for fighting germs, bacteria and viruses that make it effective for both skin care and home care. Add tea tree oil to water in a glass spray bottle to clean your shower or cover your perimeter to deter bugs.

Rosemary essential oil is one of the most multi-purpose essential oils for home cleaning. It provides antibacterial and antiseptic properties that can kill bacteria caused by food residue on your counters, be used in dish soap and to help clean clothes as a laundry detergent. It can also be mixed with peppermint as a fragrance spray (with the added bonus that this combination will keep you alert and focused)!

Spring cleaning may be physically and mentally taxing. However, with the use of essential oil products, such as those provided by Aromafloria, it can be safe and effective, leaving your home feeling, looking, smelling and actually being the cleanest and safest it has ever been. Happy spring!
